In game 3 of the 1953 Word Series, Indiana-born Carl Erskine struck out 14 Yankees to set a new World Series strikeout record. He gave up just 6 hits in a 3-2 Dodger victory.
After graduating high school in 1945, Erskine worked out for the Dodgers but couldn't sign because he had to serve his time in the Navy . When World War II ended the following year, Erskine signed with the Dodgers at the age of 19. He played a year and a half for the Danville Dodgers, before being called up to Brooklyn.
