BoBo Smalls

Played for the Danville Jets, Boosters, Bullets and Stars

Who played for the last existing team in the Negro League? (Scroll for video!)
Nate "Bobo" Smalls, a native of Savannah, Ga., moved to Danville in 1969. He was a member of the Indianapolis Clowns, a team in the last Negro Baseball Barnstorming League, from 1965 to 1986. He played for the team longer than any other member. From game to game, his attire varied from a standard baseball uniform to a blond wig, pink skirt, bra and white shoes.
For three decades (1970-1998), Bobo also played for independent ball teams like the Danville Boosters, who played at Danville Stadium.

Remembering Nate Smalls

Smalls was one of the primary organizers of a summer basketball league for young people at Danville's Garfield Park and was one of the founding members of the Three Kings of Peace along with Edward Butler and the Rev. Frank McCullough. The three volunteered daily in Danville schools to serve as mentors for students and to help reduce violence in the schools.
